GODWIN: A Young Adult With Down Syndrome Plays Lead Role In TV Series In Nigeria

One of my favorite quote is that of Alexander the Great which goes like this: “There is nothing impossible to him who try.”

In a country like Nigeria, where there are no structures in place for persons with disability (let alone those living with Down syndrome) to live independently and pursue their dreams, a lot of things seem impossible.

Persons with disability are discriminated in the society they live in and abandoned by even their family members.

In as much as it is going to take a lot of advocacy and resources to achieve our goal of  an inclusive society for persons living with Down syndrome in Nigeria, it is not impossible!

We just have to keep telling stories and helping the world see the ability in their disability.

Last month, a project that we have been working on with Wale Adenuga Productions (WAP) for more than a year, was launched.

SuperStory, the popular television series, commenced its new season titled Godwin last month to the delight of viewers. The series stars Solomon Omere, a multiple-talented 26-year old man living with Down Syndrome.

Managing Director, Wale Adenuga Productions (WAP), said:

“One interesting thing about this production is that it is not about a person living with Down Syndrome, begging for your acceptance. Rather, it is about him excelling in life and fulfilling his dreams in a way that you will be the one craving his acceptance. According to the National Down Syndrome Society, 1 in 691 babies are born with Down Syndrome in Nigeria and Godwin is set to provide enlightenment and eradicate the prevailing stigma.”
